Deputies shot at while responding to Domestic

ON 2-16-16 DEPUTY CATHY BYRD AND LT. BILL FINLEY WERE DISPATCHED TO #27 BASS LANE TO THE REPORT OF AN ACTIVE DOMESTIC. UPON ARRIVAL WE MET WITH ANALEE CURTIS. SHE STATED THAT HER BOYFRIEND PAUL DEASON (34 YRS OLD) LOCKED HER OUT OF THE HOUSE AND WAS VERY INTOXICATED.
DEPUTY BYRD AND LT. FINLEY WALKED TO THE DOOR. DEPUTY BYRD KNOCKED VERY LOUDLY ON THE DOOR ANNOUNCING THAT THEY WERE THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND WE NEEDED MR. DEASON TO COME OUT. AFTER THE FOURTH TIME OF DEPUTY BYRD ANNOUNCING THAT THEY WERE WITH THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND THEY NEEDED MR. DEASON TO COME OUT THERE WAS A GUN SHOT AT WHICH TIME LT. FINLEY NOTIFIED DISPATCH THAT SHOTS WERE BEING FIRED. DEPUTY BYRD AND LT. FINLEY TOOK POSITIONS BEHIND THE PATROL CAR, LT. FINLEY SAW THE DOOR WAS OPEN A LITTLE BIT AND HE TOLD DEASON TO STEP OUT OF THE HOUSE WITH HIS HANDS UP, THEN LAY ON THE GROUND AT WHICH POINT DEPUTY BYRD PLACED DEASON INTO CUSTODY. LT. FINLEY THEN WENT IN AND CLEARED THE HOUSE AND FOUND 2 .380 PISTOLS LOADED. BOTH HAD SHELLS CHAMBERED ON THE KITCHEN TABLE. ONE PISTOL, A .380 ACP HAD RECENTLY BEEN SHOT. THERE WAS A SMELL OF FRESH POWDER COMING FROM THE GUN. UPON CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE HOUSE LT. FINLEY FOUND A HOLE IN THE WALL APPROXIMATELY 3 FOOT FROM THE DOOR ON THE LEFT ABOUT FIVE FEET 9 INCH FROM THE FLOOR, THE AREA WHERE DEPUTY BYRD AND LT. FINLEY WERE STANDING. LT. FINLEY STEPPED OUTSIDE AND FOUND A MARK ON THE WALL CORRESPONDING WITH THE HOLE ON THE INSIDE WHERE THE PAINT WAS CRACKING AND THE SIDING WAS SPLIT FROM BEING HIT ON THE INSIDE OF THE SIDING. “THE GOOD LORD WAS WITH LT. FINLEY AND DEPUTY BYRD, THAT’S THE ONLY THING THAT KEPT THE BULLET FROM GOING THRU THAT SIDING AND HITTING LT. FINLEY IN THE HEAD”, SHERIFF MONTGOMERY STATED. LT. FINLEY FOUND AN EMPTY SHELL CASING THAT WAS EJECTED FROM THE PISTOL APPROXIMATELY 15 FEET TO THE RIGHT OF THE DOOR UP AGAINST THE WALL.
DEASON WAS TRANSPORTED TO PERRY COUNTY DETENTION CENTER AND CHARGED AS FOLLOWS:
5-13-211 AGGRAVATED ASSAULT UPON CERTIFIED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER X2 CLASS D FELONY
5-13-204 AGGRAVATED ASSAULT CLASS D FELONY
